Beekeeping for sustainable agriculture and additional income
Bee Keeping Workshop
The beekeeping workshop has started in Sri Lanka. These workshops are designed to provide local residents with the knowledge and skills they need to successfully keep bees and produce honey.
Honeybees play a crucial role in our ecosystems. They are not only essential for crop pollination but also contribute to the biodiversity of our planet. The main goal of this workshop is to promote sustainable agricultural practices. This is achieved by integrating beekeeping as a complementary activity in organic tea cultivation.
Objectives
- Improved pollination: By establishing beehives, we enhance pollination and increase crop yields.
- Additional income for farmers: Honey production offers an extra source of income for local farmers.
- Education and training: We provide local residents with education, training, and essential materials to keep bees and produce honey themselves.
We are working with 50 organic farmers, spread over 16 areas. This area covers a total of 150 hectares. The expected honey production is 14 to 18 kilograms per month per healthy beehive. Each beehive houses 60,000 bees, resulting in a total population of 3 million bees within three months if the project is successful.
