Our Fair Grounds Foundation Efforts in Sri Lanka
Post‑Cyclone Ditwah Recovery
In late November 2025, Sri Lanka was severely affected by Cyclone Ditwah. The storm caused extensive flooding, landslides and major damage to local infrastructure. Roads, bridges and power lines were destroyed or rendered unusable, leaving many areas temporarily cut off from aid. For thousands of families, this meant not only damage to their homes, but also the loss of income and essential services such as access to clean drinking water. Through the Fair Grounds Foundation, we continue to support our partners during these challenging circumstances.
Short-term support
Immediate assistance was organised as quickly as possible to ensure that affected families could rely on practical help and initial recovery measures right away. Together with our local partners, we assessed the most urgent needs in the impacted regions. Our short‑term support included:
- Providing building materials to repair damaged homes
- Supporting 13 families on the Abbotsleigh Tea Estate, where roofs were heavily damaged
- Offering emergency assistance to employees of our production partners who were directly affected
- Improving access to water and temporary facilities in hard‑to‑reach areas
A local contractor carried out the roof repairs immediately, ensuring that these families could return to a safe living environment as quickly as possible.
Long‑term Support
We contribute to sustainable recovery to provide long‑lasting support to affected communities. Although water levels have now receded and temporary repairs have begun, structural restoration remains essential. Of the €32,500 donated through the Fair Grounds Foundation, the following has already been allocated:
€11,280 for long‑term needs, including:
- restoration of boarding facilities
- support for rental housing
- repairs to private homes
€21,220 remains available for upcoming community projects focused on sustainable development and resilience. Further details on these initiatives will be shared soon.
Progress and Resilience
The situation in the region is gradually stabilising. Local production has largely returned to normal levels, and access to affected areas is steadily improving. The resilience and determination of the Sri Lankan people remain both impressive and inspiring.
As our local partner stated: “As a nation, we have risen together before, and we will do so again.”
Thanks to your continued involvement, we are able to contribute to these recovery efforts.
